How to Challenge a Skipper

For your first race you can challenge anyone apart from the top three racers. For all other races you can challenge either of the two racers above or the two racers below you. To challenge a skipper click the challenge button beneath their name. You can then fill in the details of your challenge into the form provided. The challenger should send an Instant Message to the defender and arrange the details of the event with them. Once the races are completed the challenger logs the results in the form and the ladder updates accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I race in more than one ladder? Yes. You can compete in as many ladders as you wish but we would recommend that you think carefully about racing in more than three ladders.
  • How often do I need to race? You must race at least once every four weeks. If you fail to do so you will be moved to the bottom of that ladder.
  • I have been challenged. How soon do we need to race? Once you have been challenged you have up to three weeks to race. This gives people a chance to have a RL holiday.
  • Why would someone want to challenge someone beneath them? Because of the requirement to race regularly a racer in first position must still be able to challenge other racers.
  • When can we race? What course should we use? etc. The beauty of the ladder is that you can race when and how you like. The challenger and defender can agree a date, time, course, rules, number of races, wind speed and direction that works for them.
  • What happens if the challenger and defender cannot agree on the course, etc? We would like them to work it out between themselves but if they cannot then Hans will arbitrate and perhaps specify a course that is suitable to that class.
  • What happens if I win? If you are below your opponent you will move above them in the ladder.
  • What happens if I lose? If you are above your opponent you will move below them in the ladder.
  • How many points do I win? There are no points in the ladder. You only change positions.
  • How many boats are in each race? Only two. There can be multiple crew on each boat if you wish (e.g. ACA33) in which case the skippers are the ones counted in the ladder.
  • What happens if my opponent does not show? If your opponent does not show up within 30 minutes of the time you had agreed with them you can claim the win. Having said this it is preferred that you reschedule the race with them.
  • How many races can I arrange? You can add one challenge to each ladder at any one time.
  • Is there not a risk the second place challenge the first every week until he wins? That can happen but the defender can wait up to three weeks to race the challenger so it would not be a problem.
  • Can you add more ladders? New ladders will be added if there are at least five racers wanting to race in it. If you would like a new ladder added (e.g. for one of the big boat classes) please ask all the racers who would like to compete to IM Hans Zinnemann directly.
  • I am not good enough to race yet. That is not a problem. You start at the bottom and so race sailors who are also not great. It is actually a great way to learn.
  • When does the ladder finish? The 2009 ladders will finish in December 2009.
  • Who wins the ladder? The winner is the skipper in first position at a date to be determined in December 2009.
  • Do I get notified when my match details are updated? If your email address is entered into your profile we will notify you by email.
  • Can I use an AI HUD? The idea of the ladder is that racers race other racers so using an AI is forbidden at the moment.
  • How can I stay up to date with ladder news? A group called Ladder has been set up for information updates. Racers are encouraged to join this group.
  • Can a sailing club launch participation in the ladder? Yes. Hans is more than happy to come and explain the concept of the ladder to the members in a "Ladder Roadshow".
